The Hunt's had invested heavily in silver futures, notably from the investment firm of Bache Halsey Stuart Shield. When Comex set the Silver Rule 7 limiting the purchase of commodities on margin, Bache (later Prudential Bache) issued a margin call for $100 million and the Hunts came up short.
